Many, but not all aikidoists, make a mistake when executing a fundamental aikido technique. Shomen-uchi, yokomen-uchi, and a thrusting movement (tuski) are all done, in the beginning phases, with the “same-side” foot movement. If the strike is being done starting with the right leg forward, the right hand does the striking. This is known as ipsilateral movement–many aikidoists start with the left leg forward, raise their right hand and then strike as if throwing a baseball or a “haymaker.” The correct movement pattern is outlined very well in this wonderful Nishio Sensei video starting at the 2:00 minute mark. Please enjoy this fine video and make this movement you own as well.
